Are you just beginning in the huge world of search engine optimization and search engine marketing? Well, this article will help you get the basics of your on page SEO, which is very important. Basically, the on page SEO is the base that you build off and a strong base is obviously easier to build on to. Off page SEO is much more important, mostly because it is a continuous process, but on page SEO is where everybody should start, especially if you are new to marketing. So, without any more introduction, lets just jump right into what you have to do for your on page SEO.
If you don’t have your keywords yet, that is definitely the first place to start. If you expect to rank for your keywords just based on your on page SEO, you are definitely going to have to pick some low competition keywords. If you will be doing continuous off page SEO and expect big things for your website, you can go for medium to hard competition. I recommend going for one hard keyword and a couple lower competition keywords for every page that you want to rank on your site. I also recommend using Google keyword tool for your research, along with manually checking out the top 10 competition for each keyword. Sure, you can go out and buy a keyword research tool, but why waste the money when you can do everything yourself?
Now that you have your keyword(s) it is time to start working on your on page SEO. The number one thing you will want to do is put your keyword(s) in the title tag of your web page. Also, make sure your title tag doesn’t exceed the title tag character limit of the search engine you are planning to market for, usually Google. Now that your title tag is set up, you are going to move on to the content of the page. Some people say there is a perfect keyword density percentage to aim for, but just keep it simple and stay in a range of around 2-5%. Don’t keyword stuff and make sure the content seems completely natural. Remember, if you expect to get good traffic, your content has to make sense! Make sure to throw some italic, bold, and h tags in there with the keywords as well!
Now that you think you have your site all ready to go when it comes to on page SEO, you should double check. Instead of doing this step manually, I recommend using a site analyzer like the SEO Powersuite’s Website Auditor, which is a great piece of software to verify that on page SEO is good to go. You can use the free version of the software or you can buy it to get all the features. It is your choice! Personally, I have gotten a lot of information about websites by just using the free version. If you don’t like the looks of this software, there are plenty of others out there that you can try out as well!
A few years ago, on page SEO used to be the only thing needed to rank for keywords. Now, off page SEO has taken the precedence. However, if your competition has horrible on page SEO and the same exact off page SEO as you, you will outrank them for sure! For that reason, you never want to leave out on page SEO in your online marketing plan, especially if you are just starting out!
